There is no one alive today who can say that social media hasn’t changed our lives. Think about how kids grew up in the 80’s and 90’s versus kids growing up today. Our furbies have been replaced with tablets. And it’s all being captured on social media.
So let’s try to remember these 8 simple things you should avoid on social media.
THING #1: Taking it personally. You are going to get a lot of spam. Just remember it’s a robot and not a real person.
I would love to tell you that every response you get on social media is going to be a genuine person that is truly interested in working with you. However, that’s no longer the case. Today you will find you will get many responses or possibly friend request on social media from people who are not actually people. They’re robots. And not the friendly robots but the annoying robots who just want to hack your system. That’s why you really need to be careful with your social media and how you share your information and remember not to take it personally.
THING #2: Expecting to get 10,000 followers from a $5 post boost
Advertising on social media is no longer what it used to be. Once upon a time for a very small investment you got a huge return on your advertising on Facebook. However today that’s not quite the case. If advertising on Facebook or another social media platform is in your marketing plan make sure you have a budget that is big enough to get the results you’re looking for. You want to figure an average of at least 2 to 5 dollars per click when it comes to advertising on social media.
THING #3: Trying to be on every social media platform.
Pick one and love it! There are so many wonderful social media platforms out there today. Facebook or Instagram. Snapchat is another example. LinkedIn is another option for you. So how do you know what platform to choose? Many people try to be on all the different platforms at once. While it may sound great to be everywhere, You are actually limiting your exposure by not being committed enough to a single channel. Pick one channel to start out with and devote everything you’ve got to it. As it grows and your following grows then you can consider being on different platforms as well.
THING #4: Making it all about you.
It’s a social network. A place to be social and network so go out and start a conversation with all those fabulous peeps out there. There’s a reason they are called social networks. They are a place for you to be social and network with other people. This means it’s not all about you. Start conversations, make friends, get to know people, and genuinely take an interest in others if you want to see a big return on your investment on social media.
THING #5: Not completing your profile.
Make sure you include a link to your website, a little bio, and a fabulous picture of your beautiful face! What’s worse than getting all excited about something but not knowing how to obtain it. Too many times people go to a profile on social media, see an amazing product they really really want, and then get frustrated because there’s no way to purchase it. Not only do they get frustrated with the product they get frustrated with your brand. Make sure you include a link to your website, a little bio and a fabulous picture of you.
THING #6: Not scheduling your posts.
There is no reason why each and every day you should be stressing about getting your social media to post out. Thanks for the beautiful things like buffer for free you can schedule your social media posts for as long as you like.
THING #7: Not understanding the lingo.
Once you pick your channel, learn all the terminology. Know what a pixel is. Study everything you can about. There’s much more to social media than just showing up. You need to also learn how to use the platform. If someone says they’re going to DM you, don’t take it personally. It just means they want to send you a message. But if you don’t learn the lingo you might not understand what someone is trying to tell you.
THING #8: Trying to be someone you’re not.
Just be your beautiful self and everyone who is supposed to will love you for it. We promise! If you are only going to follow one rule on social media follow this one. Be yourself. Don’t try to be something you’re not. People will be able to tell. And honestly, there’s no reason for it. Just like you wouldn’t walk into a room and try to be someone else, don’t show up on social media and try to be someone else. All you need to do is be your beautiful self and those who should be attracted to you will be attracted to you.
So, which one of these have you been guilty of?
